Rudd fishing

The rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) is a pretty, surface-oriented coarse fish with bright red fins — similar to the roach but holding higher in the water. Here are the key tips for rudd fishing.

Locations and waters

Rudd love weedy, still or slow waters: ponds, lakes, backwaters and lily beds. Unlike the roach, they often hold in mid-water or right under the surface, especially on warm, sunny days along weed and reed edges.

Bait and rigs

Bread flake, maggots, sweetcorn and paste all catch — on a fine, lightly shotted float rig. Set the depth shallower than for roach, often just 30–60 cm under the surface. With bread or a small dry fly you can also tempt rudd straight off the top.

Technique: fishing high in the water

Feed loose floating maggots or small pieces of bread to draw the fish up and onto your spot. Keep the float light and watch it closely — the bites are quick. A thin leader and a small hook bring noticeably more fish.

Season and best bite time

The best time is the warm half-year from late spring to late summer. On sunny, warm days rudd hold actively high in the water; in the cold they drop deeper and become sluggish.

5 quick rudd tips

  • Present the bait higher than for roach — often just under the surface.
  • Feed loose maggots or bread to draw the fish up.
  • A light float, thin leader and small hook bring more bites.
  • On sunny days fish weed and reed edges deliberately.
  • Note the depth, bait and spot for your next trip.
